Training in Compassionate Communication!

Citizen Discourse (a Compassionate Austin Co-op Member) supports the development of self-aware and empathetic global citizens prepared to contribute to the advancement of a more just and compassionate society. Through workshops, trainings and consulting, participants build trust and create space for productive conversations. Drawing from research in the fields of social psychology and brain science, Citizen Discourse’s methodology applies experiential learning, peer-to-peer sharing, practice, and reflection to support conversations around identity, values, purpose, and life skills.  Everyone is invited to sign the Compassion Contract!  Contact:  Karen Gross.

Compassionate Media!

Austin is home to a unique radio show, “Dr. Mara Karpel & Your Golden Years.” The show is for all who want to live healthfully, passionately, and purposefully, all the way into old age.  Dr. Mara Karpel interviews expert guests, national musicians and artists, and those involved in healing the local and the global communities.  Compassion is a key pillar of living a passionate life!

Design-Thinking for Social Good!

Austin is a vital hub of design-thinking and social innovation, as exemplified by the The Impact Factory at the University of Texas at Austin.  Design-thinking for social good has empathy and compassion at its core.

The “OpenIDEO” Austin Chapter launched in December, 2017 and continued through 2019.  The Chapter gathered members of our community together to use design-thinking to address local and global challenges.  Unfortunately, the Chapter dissolved during the Covid-19 pandemic.  However,  Compassionate Austin created a unique model and example at the time, joining the global networks of Compassionate Cities and the OpenIDEO City Chapters.  Austin was the 1st city in the world with this innovative “mash-up,” demonstrating how design-thinking for social good helps build a more compassionate city and world.

Compassion Skills Education!

Austin Independent School District’s “Transformative SEL” is a process whereby young people and adults build strong, respectful, and lasting, relationships that facilitate co-learning to critically examine root causes of inequity, and to develop collaborative solutions that lead to personal, community, and societal well-being.”  SEL helps strengthen compassion skills and is a catalyst for compassionate action.
